About Terhart

For more than 30 years, the Terhart nursery has stood for the successful production of high-quality potted plants. The company's success story began in 1993 with the development of a one-hectare field for heather (Calluna) production. At the time, it was hard to imagine that Klaus Terhart would lead the business to its current scale: today, the operation manages an impressive 8,000 m² of greenhouse cultivation as well as 5.5 hectares of outdoor fields. In parallel with this continuous expansion, the plant portfolio has been steadily expanded to meet market demands. Particular emphasis is placed on future-oriented and environmentally friendly management.

To make production increasingly sustainable, the company relies on modern approaches such as the integration of beneficial insects, the targeted use of controlled-release fertilizers and plant strengtheners, as well as the implementation of peat substitutes. Driven by a strong spirit of innovation, the business never shies away from testing new cultivation methods, fertilizer systems, or crop protection strategies to always stay ahead of the curve and ensure the highest quality standards.

What's new at Terhart?

The distinct variety within the Terhart nursery’s product range continues to require a high degree of meticulous manual labor. Nevertheless, the company is setting forward-looking benchmarks for modernization: this year, the course is being set to automate production step by step, starting with the outdoor fields. The business is also deeply committed to the responsible use of resources. Given the increasing focus on water consumption, a pilot project utilizing an innovative pulse irrigation technology is currently being conducted outdoors. In parallel, the heating technology is undergoing a future-oriented evolution.

While 250 kW of waste heat from a biogas plant is already being utilized for the base load, the peak-load supply is receiving a sustainable modernization: this year, the existing 900 kW anthracite coal heating system will be replaced by a modern liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) combined heat and power (CHP) unit. This investment will enable the business not only to generate the required heat highly efficiently on-site but also to simultaneously produce its own electricity for production needs.

Range overview

The year at the Terhart nursery is shaped by a continuous and vibrant production rhythm. Activity is already in full swing during the first quarter, when spring-flowering plants like primroses, violas, and English daisies (Bellis), alongside cushion perennials and mixed-genus pots and bowls, kick off the season. In parallel, the demanding propagation of young bedding and balcony plants from unrooted cuttings (URCs) takes place in-house. Thanks to this close integration of production steps, an extensive and high-quality range of potted plants is also available from April to June. For the subsequent summer period, the nursery cultivates two staggered batches of flowering perennials in 12 cm pots, as well as an attractive assortment of snack vegetables in 17 cm pots. Finally, autumn marks another highlight of the nursery year: alongside the well-known Gardengirls® in various pot sizes and creative combinations, Gaultheria, Calocephalus, and Cyclamens complete the autumn display of color.

The prizes drawn will be listed in the respective contest description. Cash payout or exchange of the prizes are excluded. Prizes cannot be transferred to third parties (unless otherwise agreed in the contest). Participation in the prize draw is open to those who answer the contest question(s) correctly or fulfill the contest conditions.

Each participant can only participate once per contest. Multiple comments will be counted as a single entry. Comments that violate Instagram guidelines, German law and/or copyright will be removed without notice upon knowledge. The participant is thereby excluded from winning. The winner must contact info@gardengirls.de via email or send a private message to the Gardengirls Instagram page with their address details within 5 business days.
