Hessian gardening tradition

About Gartenbau Bartholme

The Bartholme horticultural company, based in the hessian Bürstadt, has been established since 1958. At that time, only vegetables were grown on 2 hectares of open land and 600 square meters of glasshouse. Today, the business cultivates a wide range of potted plant cultures on a total area of 14 hectares, built with approximately 21,500 square meters of glasshouse area. The main cultures of the business are Calluna vulgaris from Gardengirls and the zig zag shrub Corokia cotoneaster of the best quality in Europe.

Continuous optimization of production and cultivation is very important to managing director Bernd Bartholme. Sustainability also plays an important role in the production company. By producing their own young plants, transport routes are saved, and only recyclable PCR pots are used. Moreover, rainwater is used for resource-saving irrigation, and a photovoltaic system supplies the business with electricity.

What's new at Bartholme?

The Bartholme horticultural business is gradually upgrading the operation for the future. A current issue is the renewal of the watering nozzles on the watering carts, aiming to reduce the water demand in cultivation. This measure indicates the company places great importance on sustainability and environmental protection. Another project approach at Bartholme is the testing of new peat substitute mixtures. These contain 5-10% replacement materials and are not only more environmentally friendly but also more efficient. Depending on the test results, it is even conceivable to use substrates in the future

with a higher proportion of substitute materials. "We are experimenting with various mixtures and are open to new ideas," explains Bernd Bartholme. In addition, the company has started to expand its range with the new NEXXT varieties, such as Paula, Patricia, or Coco. These vibrant new breeds offer not only longevity but also the benefit of increased sustainability in their final use. With these measures, Bartholme's horticulture business demonstrates that it is meeting the demands of modern, environmentally conscious horticulture.
