Gartenbau Heiner Verrieth from Kevelaer in the Lower Rhine region was founded in 1962, and since 2007, Heiner Verrieth has been running the family business in its second generation. The company's focus is on bedding and balcony plants in the spring and heather plants in the fall. The operation is continuously modernized; for example, in 2016, a loading hall with two truck ramps was added. The business now spans approximately 12 hectares of open field and 2 hectares under glass at two locations in Kevelaer-Twisteden.

and in the Netherlands in Wellerlooi, just across the Dutch border. Sustainability is becoming increasingly important at Gartenbau Heiner Verrieth. This includes the certification of the operation according to MPS-A+, MPS-GAP, and GRASP, as well as the related optimizations such as the use of plant protection products and fertilizers, and the management of energy and water consumption.

Latest News at Gartenbau Heiner Verrieth

Gartenbau Verrieth places great importance on protecting and promoting native biodiversity. Beehives are located on the company’s farmland, and nesting boxes and bird feeding stations have been installed to provide safe habitats for birds and insects. A bat box was also recently handcrafted to support these beneficial animals. In autumn 2025, a diverse mixed hedge will be planted along one of the agricultural fields. These hedgerows enhance ecological diversity and offer vital shelter for wildlife and insects. Back in 2024, various bee-friendly wildflower mixtures were sown on a smaller field at the Wellerlooi site as part of a test phase. The most successful mixture from these trials is now being used for long-term establishment. The company also maintains a traditional orchard next to the greenhouse, featuring apple, cherry, plum, and pear trees. This type of cultivation supports biodiversity and preserves old fruit varieties.

Gartenbau Verrieth is also investing in sustainable energy solutions. Plans are underway for additional solar panel installations and the introduction of electric company vehicles, including an in-house charging station. A strong focus is placed on reducing peat use in horticultural substrates—a key step in protecting the climate and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The company aims to gradually decrease the use of peat in its production. For bedding and balcony plants grown exclusively in the greenhouse, substrates containing 20% wood fiber are already in use, delivering excellent results in both plant quality and development.
