About Gartenbau Matenaer

Founded in 1950 by Peter op de Hipt, the Matenaer horticulture business initially focused on growing vegetables, some of which was sold at the market. From 1960, the company switched to cut flowers, including carnations, roses, freesias and chrysanthemums. In 1968, Peter's son Theo op de Hipt started an apprenticeship in horticulture and started working in the family business from 1971. Under Theo's leadership, the company was gradually expanded. In 1976, the first switch to potted plants was made with about 3000 square meters of greenhouse space and an open field for 50000 Erica gracilis.

By the year 2000, the operation had expanded to a size of approximately 6,000 m², with about 1.5 hectares of open land. In 2002, Thomas Matenaer joined the company as a journeyman and later as a master. A further expansion occurred in 2006 with the founding of the Op de Hipt & Matenaer GbR. In 2009, the container area was expanded, and the greenhouses were extended. By 2012, the company occupied about 20,000 m² of greenhouse space with seven hectares of open land. Finally, the Matenaer horticultural operation was handed over in 2023.

What's new at Matenaer?

The Matenaer horticulture business stands for innovative plant culture and responsible business management. They continually expand their offering with new mixed varieties to optimally meet the requirements of their customers. Continuous development is an essential part of their corporate philosophy. In 2024, a new greenhouse was built, with an area of 5,000 m², which enabled Matenaer to increase their capacities and now expand their offering. Furthermore, Matenaer erected a new work hall on one of the open land areas in order to work more efficiently. For them, sustainability is not a trend but a matter of course.

Therefore, Matenaer relies on recyclable plant pots and has reduced the use of peat in the substrate in the calluna area by 25% by switching to alternative ingredients such as wood fibres. Looking ahead, they plan to use return robots and already make use of a planting robot from the company TTA. With this kind of automation, they can make their processes more efficient while simultaneously ensuring the quality of their plants.
