About Gartenbau Silber

Gartenbau Silber looks back on a long history in the green industry. The company was founded over 100 years ago by Gottlieb Elfers. Today, Inid Schiller leads the business in its fourth generation. Collaborative partnership and open communication with both customers and employees are particularly important to her. Silber produces around 24 million young plants and approximately 500,000 finished plants annually across two locations. At the Ottersberg site, which was founded in 1969, heather young plants are propagated from cuttings and cultivated year-round on around eleven hectares of operating space from October to April. The Eckstever division was added in 1983 with 10,000 m². Young plants are primarily cultivated here and pricked out starting in May. In summer, the flowering plants are kept here.

The young plant company focuses heavily on sustainable plant production. Since 2022, a photovoltaic system has provided an autonomous power supply at the Eckstever site, and the electricity demand in Ottersberg has also been supported by a 134 kWp system since 2024. In terms of crop protection, beneficial organisms are predominantly and successfully used for biological pest control. But sustainability is also a top priority beyond their own production: the company's ecological compensation area consists of wet meadows and orchard meadows, and there is a small mixed forest directly adjacent to the operating facility in Ottersberg.

News at Gartenbau Silber

The topic of peat reduction remains highly relevant. For pot cultures, substrates with 40% peat substitutes are already being used. In 2025, we participated in a peat trial (TerZ100) in cooperation with the Chamber of Agriculture of Lower Saxony (Landwirtschaftskammer Niedersachsen). In 2026, we are continuing to test a pot substrate reduced by 70% using Gardengirls plants within the framework of TerZ100, where the end product's shelf life is tested at the retail level compared to the standard product. Gartenbau Silber relies on well-organized processes equipped with modern technology.

For example, an automatic pricking machine, an expanded seeding line, and a tray washing machine are utilized. Since 2025, a pedestrian-controlled forklift—the "Mini Jack" from the company Seed2Soil—has supported potting operations. It significantly eases the workload for employees, both when placing pots down and when spacing them out in the outdoor areas. Also in use since 2025 is a ride-on lawnmower that lightens the workload in an innovative way. It is not only GPS-controlled and capable of mowing Silber's outdoor areas, but it can also haul the benches loaded with potted goods from the greenhouses to the field.

Gärtnerei Silber primarily cultivates young plants for Gardengirls producers. Out of the entire Gardengirls assortment of Calluna, including combination mixes, they also produce Erica carnea, Erica x darleyensis, and Daboecia. As a trial nursery, they test newly bred varieties and variety combinations in advance, allowing their evaluation results (Bonitur) to be incorporated into the decision-making process for market launches. In addition to the Gardengirls range, other young plants such as Gaultheria procumbens, Boronia anemonifolia, or Hypericum inodorum are also produced. Companion and structural plants for nursery customers further expand the product range.
