Production, Breeding and Innovation

About: Hiedl Heidekulturen

Hiedl Heidekulturen is a family-run young plant production nursery in Altusried in the Allgäu region, specialising in heather and special crops. The company was founded in 1956 and is now run by Vincent, Lorenz, Katharina and Helmut Hiedl in the third generation. Over the years, the business has undergone numerous expansion and modernisation measures.

Hiedl has specialised in offering plants at every stage, from cuttings and young plants to raw material and flowering finished products. The focus is on individual customer wishes and advice. This customer-orientation enables Hiedl Heidekulturen to produce the right product for every grower.

What's new at Hiedl?

Hiedl Heidekulturen is a company that looks to the future. The focus is on utilising the latest technologies in production and making them more efficient. Another milestone in efficient and precise production control was reached with the expansion of the insertion line, in which insertion plates are scanned and stored with their respective locations in the operating system. In spring 2025, the company also invested in a modern cutting robot, which enables faster and more efficient processing of large quantities - essential with a proud production volume of around 18.5 million cuttings per year.

Thanks to these system optimisations, Hiedl is able to maintain a daily overview of the entire production process. This leads to even better planning and continuous quality control, which will continue to characterise Hiedl Heidekulturen as a reliable partner in the future. In addition, operating areas and greenhouses are continuously being expanded and modernised in order to optimise processes. The optimisation of the energy supply also plays a central role.

Breeding at Hiedl

Breeding has become more and more of a focus at Hiedl in recent years. For this reason, Helmut and Lorenz Hiedl founded the breeding unit Neoplant in 2022, which specialises entirely in the development of new varieties and techniques with a focus on callunas, Erica gracilis and Erica cinerea. The goals for the selection of new plants and breeding successes are ambitious: robust, hardy plants with exceptional colour, compact growth and unproblematic cultivation.

Neoplant has already achieved a number of successes: For example, a new Calluna vulgaris series has been introduced under the name NEXXT with varieties such as “Amina”, “Aurica” or “Lilith”, whose characteristics reflect the breeding objectives. Another highlight is the Erica gracilis “Peaches” of the Heidi's brand with iridescent flower colour as well as various particularly long-lived Erica cinerea such as the varieties “Amos”, “Ceres” or “Rhea”. Neoplant is involved in several breeding committees: As a member of CIOPORA Germany and as coordinator of the Erica sub-network of the German Genebank for Ornamental Plants, Neoplant has a strong network in the industry and provides new impetus in modern heather cultivation with a great deal of innovative strength and sustainability.
