Usage & Plant care tips

Gardengirls® are easy care plants. Important is to purchase fresh plants in the nursery or the garden market of your choice. Our experienced growers already made the plants fit for the time at the consumer.

Follow us at Facebook & Instagram – here you will find hints how to use heather.

For colour bowls and decorative planters:

Use only fresh growing media with high organic matter. Most suitable are special soil for Rhododendron/ Azalea/ Hortensia. The pH of those media are adapted to the need of acid soil. Important for the wellness of the plants is sufficient moisture, even in winter or high wind areas. Water logging and drought result in stress. Containers need drainage holes at the bottom to avoid standing water. A layer of coarse sand at the bottom improves the drainage.

Interior decoration:

Gardengirls® will feel very well as interior decoration. The robust plant won’t shed any leaves or buds onto the white table cloth. However, a bud-bloomer used as table décor in a nice pot or as part of floral arrangements is definitely the talk-of-the-town. Important for longer enjoyment is a spot with light and sufficient moisture, but no water-logging. Cooler room-temperatures increase the shelf-life. Warmer window spots will dry out the soil faster. Later on the plants can be planted out, but avoid extreme temperature changes.

For the garden and cemetery

Plant out directly after purchasing the plants. A long storage without spacing, air circulation and light will deteriorate the quality rapidly. Important is a loose soil with good drainage. Colour will last long if kept sufficient moist.
Should Gardengirls® grow for several years, plant them in a sunny to max. semi-shaded location. In spring, the plants should be pruned back to the green leaves just below the old buds. This will guarantee a compact growth, harmonised sprouting of the new stems and building of the new buds in the following spring. The pH of the garden soil should be approx. slightly acid with 4-4, 5. Special growing media for Rhododendron/ Azaleas or pure peat moss will lower the pH. A sandy soil with high organic matter is most suitable. Incorporating coarse sand will improve the drainage.
Planting the bud-bloomers in groups of the same colour will give you the heather garden look.
Fertilize after pruning with organic fertilizer (1 table spoon per plant) or mineral fertilizer marked for use with Rhododendron and Hortensia (1 table spoon per m²).
