About Marohn und Häger

The Marohn and Häger nursery in Apen-Tange produces over 170 different heather varieties, from young plants to finished goods. Founded in 1985, the company's focus is on growing bud-blooming heather of the Gardengirls brand in various pot sizes. The additional heather assortment includes Erica carnea and the summer bloomers Daboecia, Erica cinerea, and Erica vagans. Additionally, the company offers grasses, Gaultheria procumbens, Empetrum, and Hebe as companion plants in their range.

The managing director, Horst Marohn, is also one of the four original Gardengirls breeders. Among others, he is the creator of the new NEXXT varieties Coco, Milva, and Dorina, which provide fresh colors in October with their late bloom. The breeding of the Gardengirls focuses on particularly long-lasting, healthy plants with strong luminosity. Additionally, Horst Marohn’s new breeding, Zenzia, impresses in the Sunset Girls series with its dark green shoots and strong upright growth.

Latest News at Marohn and Häger

At the beginning of the year, a personnel change occurred in the management of Marohn and Häger Nursery. Jan de Vries has succeeded Ulrich Häger and now leads the company alongside Horst Marohn. Together, they are investing in forward-looking projects to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the business. Recently, two new water retention basins were added to allow for water reuse within the company and to conserve resources. This is part of the company's sustainable mission:

At least 30% peat substitute is already used throughout the entire cultivation, and trials with 100% peat-free substrate are underway, with additional wood fibers being used to improve drainage performance. Further steps towards efficiency enhancement include the acquisition of a new potting machine and the construction and expansion of container areas. Sustainability and continuous optimization reinforce the company during times of change.

The company's focus is on the cultivation of Gardengirls. Currently, a selection of over 35 varieties from the Gardengirls program is being cultivated, along with Gaultheria as companion plants in the autumn. As a Gardengirls test facility, customers always have access to the latest varieties. These individual plantings are complemented by Gardengirls combinations such as Twingirls, Trios, and Quattro-Girls, as well as concepts like Rasta-Girls or Sunset-Girls. In the Erica assortment, Marohn and Häger also present a novelty from their own breeding: Erica carnea 'Fenna' impresses with its compact growth and showcases its lilac-red flowers from the end of February. In addition to Erica carnea, Daboecia is also a particular focus in the program.
