Sustainability

What does sustainability mean to us?

Our production methods and processes are geared towards the important topic sustainability. The consideration of impacts on the environment are always our top priority. The production of our young plants in winter takes place pre-dominantly in the open field or in unheated greenhouses. The finished products grow in the open field without heating energy until packaging and shipping.

To conserve water, we use irrigation booms to drop the water directly into the pot to water the plants directly and not the surroundings. Water-saving microjets are also common. With both methods we can fertilize the plants directly using the irrigation systems. Since 2021, most of our growers produce the Gardengirls® in pots manufactured from recycled plastic material. Those pots can be fully recycled again by the consumer using the yellow bags or containers.

Several growers use growing media with a reduced percentage of peat. Some conduct trial production with substrates completely without peat moss.

Regionality

Our way to conserve the limited resources and optimize the work processes

Gardengirls® heather are annually produced by experienced, family-owned growers located from Schleswig-Holstein in Northern Germany to the foothills of the Alps in Bavaria. For us regionality means the close distance of our licensed producers to the market. Thus, we guarantee fresh products at any time without the environmental footprint of long-distance transportation. We stand right behind the theme “Directly from the region for the benefit of the region* and support the campaign “ Ich bin von Hier” meaning “I am from Here” of the Vereinigung Deutscher Blumengroßmärkte VDB meaning the Association of German Wholesale Flower Markets.

In addition, we use the individual prevailing climatic conditions for a perfect planning of sales activities: The varieties grown in Southern Germany mature earlier and will reach the market earlier in the season. The northern production areas serve as a natural cooling space for sales later and at the end of the year.

Short version: The principle of regional production is a significant foundation our efforts towards sustainability. It also secures our numerous growers in Germany and the neighbouring countries to benefit from the advantages of regional production and sales.

Quality

Our reasons for quality control and certification

Our goal is that the retail plant sales outlets carrying Gardengirls® can rely on consistent quality. Therefore, the majority of our Gardengirls® licensed growers are certified either by MPS or GlobalG.A.P.

The Gardengirls®-Control-System enables the traceability of every single pot to the correct grower. Every pot carries a label with the logo and an individual four-digit license code. Should deviations from the quality standards occur in the market these problems can be solved immediately on the spot with the producer involved.
